FO taste

Hi all,

I have a question re FO taste. The FO i've been using mostly has no spesific taste I think (because I do not taste the oil in the mix, so it seems it does not have a strong smell and taste). It is kind of hard to tell for me as I have not been using any oils for the past 9 years until I started Budwig. I only know how Olive oil smells and tastes because my husband really loves it but for the rest of the oils I have no idea.
I am rotating quark (3 brands that I use with clean ingredient lists) and thought to rotate the oils as well ones in a while just to be on a safe side.
The new oil that I bought has some really distinct taste, it has some fishy smell and I can definitely taste bitterness. None of that was in my previous oil. First I thought it was rancid but than I thought maybe this is the real taste of the oil?
What does your oil taste like? What is the real taste of the flaxseed oil? Is it suposed to have a distinct bitter taste and some fishy smell?

Thank you,
Irina

I have had flax oil that has an odd taste to it as well. I bought from Puritan's Pride for 7 years and then got an order that tasted terrible from them. I sent an email to their CS and was told that the seeds hadn't been "debittered" prior to pressing and that is waht caused the off taste. I complained that I couldn't use it and they refunded my money. Also, when PP was out of stock I bought from Piping Rock and their oil always had a taste to it and was a golden color. The PP oil was always quite clear, no color. The color of the oil likely has to do with color of the seeds I expect, and probably the taste. One thing that really helps with the taste of the FO/CC is stevia, as well as berries. I am not sure what rancid oil would smell or taste like.

Hello, Irina, I don't know how to describe the smell, but it definitely has a distinct smell and a bitter taste.

To know that it's not a bad oil, you can pay attention that the color is not too dark. Flaxseed oil made by heating is dark in color, like brown. A fresh cold-pressed flaxseed oil should be golden yellow.

I thought maybe it smelled a bit like raw fish.

Thank you,

If it has any fishy smell or taste, and/or bitterness, it has gone bad.  It is rancid.  Throw it away.  Consuming rancid FSO is much worse than nothing. Good FSO should have no taste other than the nice taste of fresh oil, nothing else.

It should NOT have a distinct smell and bitter taste.  I press my own, so I know what fresh FSO looks and smells and tastes like.  ANY fishy smell or taste or bitterness is a very bad sign - a sign of rancidity.  Throw it out.
