Thanks to the kindness of a member of another forum I got a fresh copy of mach3mill.xml for the new install of mach3 on a new laptop and everything is happy again.

Were you ever able to diagnose what had gone screwy?

The PC itself, it is an old Lenovo with a spin type hard drive, and the drive itself is knackered.
