Signalink Problem with Winlink - Not transmitting
I have a Signalink with a Data Cable and CAT Cable connected to the FT857 - trying to TX from Winlink / Ardop.
The CAT cable successfully (automatically) switches Band and Frequency when a Channel Selection is made. I tune successfully by way of CW key - with Red radio TX light showing, and the crossed-needle tuner shows Power out, and I tune down to 1:1 SWR. The radio works fine.
Upon Start command from Winlink, the Signalink device clicks on the PTT light, and the Ardop waterfall shows a brief TX waterfall gap. The FT857 Red TX light turns on during the TX.
HOWEVER, there is no Power Out from the rig going through the Tuner.
This is perhaps an internal FT857 Menu Setting, but I'm unsure which one to adjust.
It COULD also be on the Windows Sound side, but that seems to be functioning appropriately. The Playback : Speakers : USB Audio Codec indicates "Ready" . When the Signalink is sending to the 857, the Windows Playback Tab Output side indicates a few Green Bars of output.
I would appreciate ANY input - particularly from someone with a functioning Winlink/Windows/Signalink setup.
Thank you,

Is the radio in 'DIG' mode during this ?

Thank you Adrian. Yes, it is set to Digital and User-U.

Hi, Kevin
I run an FT-857 and SignaLink combination very successfuly on Winlink (using Winlink Express), all the FLDigi modes, all the WSJT-X modes, etc.
I'm somewhat confused by your statement that "I tune successfully by way of CW key". When I run Winlink using Ardop and want to tune or test the transmitter I go in under the Ardop>Settings menu and click on "Transmit Level Test" and it transmits for about 5 seconds, enabling me to adjust TX knob on the Signalink so that the ALC meter on the FT-857 shows just a small amount of ALC action. What happens when you do that with your setup? My other Signalink settings are RX about 11 o'clock(yours may vary) and DLY is zero (no delay, you don't want any delay).
Also, what are your settings under the Ardop>Settings>"Radio Setup" and Ardop>Settings>"Ardop TNC Setup"?

Compton, yes my eye was drawn to that feature too. Digital Gain Menu37 has been set at 90 throughout my testing. Also CAT Rate Menu19 is set to 9600. I have appended a copy of my settings for the ARDOP here, for comparison purposes. I hope we can find something "out of place" Thank you for your thoughtfulness. FYI the signal ink doesn't do cat. It is a sound card with ptt Dan KC2STA On Mon, Sep 23, 2024, 13:11 Kevin Woods VE7KHI via groups.io <kevin.kc.woods=gmail.com@groups.io> wrote:

Thanks Dan,, yes good reminder. The "Cat Calls go through another cable directly from the Radio to the Computer. So, I tried to append a copy of my Ardop settings to identify a possible error there. I cant seem to do a screen copy in these replies.
I will do a direct text copy of the Radio Settings for ARDOP, addressed to Bill below . . . |
Thanks Bill, that Tune feature is handy. However, when it sends the signal through the Signalink, the PTT light goes on, but it does not send any signal to the Radio. Nothing shows on the Multifunction MFi setting when the MTR is set to PWR/Power. But when I change the radio to CW and operate the paddle, it shows full power deflection on the vertical histogram as expected.
ARDOP Settings:

Serial Port COM5 CAT 9600 (Menu19, CatRate 9600)

I will also go back into the Signalink later today, and check all the Jumpers and Wires.
Thanks for your continued curiosity Bill,

I looks very much a lack of audo > modulation causing the issue. One other thing to check is your hardware, and are plugs in deep enough ? Some have a shoulder that prevent deep connection, requiring some trimming to clear.

Back to First Principles - R.T.F.M.
I went back to the innards of the Signalink and examined the Connections. They were good - but not in the right Sockets. I'm running fine now.
I had taken the short-cut of asking an A.I. system for a summary of the correct Signalink and FT857 Wire and Jumper connections, and with a straight face, it proceeded to misinform me.
Last night, I went back to the Tigertronics site and found the correct jumper settings. R.T.F.M. The original one!
I thank the wonderful, thoughtful Elmers in our global community who led me towards this final fix. Both CAT and Data systems are working fine.

Hmm...I'm thinking maybe it's a PTT issue rather than lack of audio/modulation.
Your settings are very different from mine. Some of my settings are as follows. Under "ARDOP setup" my "virtual tnc command port" is "8200" where you said yours is 8100. Also, I have checked the box next to "Show ARDOP TNC screen when it's launched". On the ARDOP TNC screen I click on "File" and then select "Virtual TNC setup" which brings up another window titled "ARDOP Win TNC Setup" . Under "ARDOP Win TNC Setup" what are you showing for "Sound Card Capture Device"? If your SignaLink is properly set up under Windows I believe "Sound Card Capture Device" should be set to "Line (USB AUDIO CODEC)" and "Sound Card Playback Device" should be set to "Speakers (USB AUDIO CODEC)". Those are my settings. Also under the "File" menu under "Radio settings" under PTT Control "PTT mode/ComPort" mine is set to "VOX/Signalink".

Ptt is obviously working.. Not setting tyhe signallink jumpers correctly disconnects the audio path.

Running Windows 8.1. I have the 6pin Data cord and the 8pin CAT cord, but in all other respects - pretty vanilla. I run VHF to a Diamond groundplane antenna up about 30 feet on the roof and a solid wire 40M dipole at the same height. I find that the power out to the Antenna on HF is slightly lower than indicated on Menu 75's indicated power. But that is sleuthing for another day. I'd be curious to see a Screen Print of your ARDOP settings- for comparison. I just used Ctrl-Alt-PrtScr to copy the images. ? Are you using a CAT cable to change Band and Freq automatically from the Channel Selection screen? I'm really enjoying the Test Transmit button - very helpful! K

Hello again, Kevin
It's been so long since I set the SignaLink/FT857 up I have forgotten a lot of the details., so this is a good review for me. Yes, I am using a CAT cable (it's an 8-pin mini-DIN) to control the ft857. This cable goes directly from the computer (I'm running win10) to the CAT/Linear jack on the rear of the ft-857. I also have a USB cable running from the computer to the SignaLink. A separate cable runs from the Signalink to the ft-857 and is plugged into the 6-pin mini-DIN "DATA" jack on the back of the ft-857. I seem to recall that I purchased (and installed) a "plug & play" jumper module for the ft-857 when I purchased the SignaLink.
I have attached screen shots of my ardop settings, hope they get thru.
