Auto cig lighter power source issue

Brought my FT857 from the shack to my new plug in hybrid car and powered with 6pin cig lighter connection . antenna magnetic cartop vertical. I get power but no send or receive signal. Thoughts ?

Not to sound silly but, I might temporarily take it back in the shack and make sure it works there (with no peripherals connected). Ted

Historically, lighter plug sockets in cars have not been adequate to power such a rig consistently in transmit, but it seems it should still work on receive.

The ft

Thanks for helpful comments. I was wondering if it’s a grounding issue. Have been trying to avoid a direct connect to battery which is why I  tried the 6pin cig lighter connector to power the rig. I suppose I can haul my 12v marine battery into the car cabin.

If the problem continues once you've tried a known good power supply or battery l'd look at the antenna and feed line. Most any adequately powered radio will receive something if you simply insert the end of a long piece of wire into the center conductor of the antenna connector (don't try to transmit until you get the receive issue figured out). Do you have/ can you borrow an antenna analyser? Next I'd start looking at settings in the rig (squelch/ RF gain, etc). Let us know when you discover the answer. Ted KE4NBB

I had an automobile audio store replace my cigarette lighter with a dual Anderson PowerPole receptacle and used 10 AWG wire from it to the battery with a fuse at the battery.  The Powerex receptacle fits in the hole from the cigarette receptacle.

Works great.

I mounted mine right above the battery in the trunk of my Toyota Camry Hybrid and remote the head to the dash area. For years I used a trunk-mounted Dual-band antenna for VHF/UHF and a hustler on a fender-mounted ball mount.  When I upgraded to a 2018 TCH, I installed  a 2" hitch and mounted the hustler on a receiver that fit the hitch.  I finally broke down and bought an ATAS 120 a couple years ago.  I had to run a ground cable from the receiver to the hitch, but all worked great and I get next to no hybrid noise with the ATAS.

Assuming "antenna magnetic cartop vertical" is UHF...
How did you test the receive ?
I would  not transmit UNTIL the RX gets some signal - hence antenna is actually connected.

Again - if it is UHF power ground has NO relation to antenna ground.

Tested receive with simplex hand held . Here are the peripherals I’m try to replace power source and antenna ( jpole and 12v marine battery)

Robert,

To be perfectly honest, before you buy two major components, I would recommend you lose the cigarette lighter plug, and upgrade your wiring.  The nature of low voltage DC makes it imperative that wire size, quality, and ALL connections are capable of maintaining full voltage for the (relatively) high surge of transmit. Attention to detail here is really important. Just an instantaneous drop in voltage can mess with a transmitter. 12 VDC doesn’t give any room for margin.

Jim's point is well taken, fix the receive issue before you try to transmit. Another basic point, make sure your antenna is connected to the appropriate output connector (no need to ask me how I know)! Hi! Hi! Ted KE4NBB

Can you receive ANY signal on HF ?
AM  broadcast.... on "wet noodle" ??

On second thought
 - just plug you mag mount  to HF connector...as RX antenna

Jim
Good advice
Bob
