Will you upgrade to the FTX-1F? #poll-notice

Interested to know if folk are planning to purchase an FTX-1F?

Good question but hard to answer until an FTX-1F exists, we still don't even know if it will meet the specs they have claimed.  When there is one (and I may buy one just to see!), I can then compare and contrast.

1. It will replace my FT-817/8
2. I will never sell my FT-817/8, but may buy one in addition
3. It will be too expensive new, but may consider second-hand
4. I'm happy with my FT-817/8 with no plans to upgrade

If and only if it has band information and transmit inhibit.  I want these plus the band scope for my IF radio in the Rover.  Otherwise no.

Really too many unknowns (like price) to make a decision now.

I will say that Yaesu is *obviously* 'gunning' for the IC-705, and they've got their work cut out for them.

I believe ultimately it will be a winner, maybe even initially, but for me, I'll wait and see...

I have been playing with a Xiego 90, it has a lot of features  for a $400 radio.  I used it on a number of Pota activations. See Nov issue of QST for an article I wrote about this.

Hard to know without a price. Right now it’s a brochure photo with a $35 reservation fee. I suspect it’ll be in the vicinity of the competing ICOM and Elecraft, so probably $2,000+ with all the options.

I think you're right, MSRP/Early Adopter price will likely be right around $1,500 I figure

I can't afford to be a ham as it is, much less go off buying a new radio!  Maybe someone will give me one to try.

I am on the wait list

For $1599 it will be a great radio for portable operators

Off to watch YouTube reviews off a brochure

The haters will trash it as they can't afford it so the toxicity will come out like the haters did on the 705

Since I’ve got 2 817s and 1 818, it will be a while.

I know, isn't it amazing? YouTube "influencers" (?) reviewing a future item from a pre-release brochure (where everything is subject to change, BTW)...

I bought an IC-705 - my one and only radio bought new and not second-hand. It is an expensive affair, but also extremely capable. At one point I was planning on using it as my main base-station rig, supplemented with an amplifier.

I do tend to take the IC-705 portable more often than the FT-817, especially when I am using the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 antenna. Being a multi-band antenna the SDR on the IC-705 makes it very easy to tell which bands are open. Before the IC-705 I had a KX3 which I sold because I couldn't get on with the volume of the speaker, and I really don't like having to wear headphones on a SOTA summit, for example, where I need to be mobile.

Having said that, for a simpler dipole setup, and pure ruggedness, the FT-817 is hard to beat. It is a different radio to the IC-705, less capable functionally, yes, but also with its' own merits. Sound quality out of such a small box is amazing, and for the most part they transmit beautiful punchy audio too.

Regards, Mark.

Build your own radio.
It will be basic but will work if you properly apply the skills you need to be a ham.

Since I have a Xiegu G90 for 2 years, I have not used my 817.
As a 5-10W trx, I even prefer my homebuilt mcHF trx to the 817.

With the aivailbility of LiFepo4 batteries, I would even consider a 100W radio for portaple ops.
The Yaesu FT-710 looks promising and is probably in the same price bracket as the  FTX-1F.
