FT857 remote operation?

Is there a plug-and-play method, system, or device available for the FT857?

I'm moving from a home we built 17 years ago on a rural 5 acre plot into an apartment in a small city.

My son lives 10 miles away on 10 acres.  We have measured a couple of locations for trap 80-10 or 80-40-20 dipoles.

I want to put my FT 857 in his workshop, connected through a remote device to his wifi and then connected to my end through the Internet so I sit in the apartment and operate the FT857.

At my age, I'm just not into spending days tweaking this and that and the other . . . just looking for a simple plug-and-play interface . . . fi such a thing exists.

Thanks.

I am not aware of any plug and play devices for a Yeasu FT-857D. It can be done, but it would take a more sauvée technical person to pull it off.

Check android app called pRXTX..free version and paid version...( paid version about $2-$5
That with a cheap Bluetooth dongle ( aprox $15-20 on ebay) will work on any Android device...works with MANY models and makes of radios....including ft-816 818,897 857..AND ft-991a. Look for a video on you tube

Yes, it can be done.  First you will need a computer at you sons house that is connected to the 857 via the CAT interface so you can control the radios functions. I have a nifty CAT program called FTBCAT that works great with the 857

Your computer at you residence is connected to the remote computer via any of the remote desktop application out there.  RealVNC Viewer is one such application.  OneMachine is another.

To get the audio back and forth between machines will require an audio server that you can connect to.  There are a number of those out there, some are free and others are commercial ones that require you to purchase.  Ideally you would want one that supports PTT signals, however, with whatever CAT softare you are running to control the radio, usually will have a button that will activate teh PTT.

How does one download FTBCAT? I found it on a site, but everything I clicked that said DOWNLOAD would download something else, not FTBCAT. I hate it when people do that.

Look in to a device called a remoterig.

Its a set of 2 boxes, one goes at the radio and one goes at the remote site with the head unit, mic, speaker etc and the boxes handle the rest.

They are spendy but worth it. I travel for a living, and have this setup for my ts2000 and it works great.

Rigpi is another option.

I use Chrome Remote Desktop for my TS480 remote operation... Works great and free.

I downloaded pRXTX free and installed in my Samsung Phone. I tested with my FT-817. The app comes up and detected the CAT com port but I cannot control the radio.. Does the free version control the radio? CAT port works with FTBasic.

I'd test with my FT-857 but it is in my portable field bag downstairs :-)

How do you connect to the radio?

Bart,

I connect to the radio with a USB dongle made doe the Yeasu Radios. It works with my laptop. When I connected it to my Android phone via an OTB cable he com port is detected but I cannot control with the pRXTX free version. HAs anyone controlled their Yaeus Ft-817, 818, 857 or 897 with the free version?
