New Roku Issues

Just want to let you guys know about several issues with Rokus over the last week.

1) IP control stops working after the most recent firmware update  on newer Roku.  The Roku is still accept connections from the Crestron processor however it just ignores the Crestron commands.  After the firmware update, there is a new setting for Settings>System>  AdvanceSettingSettings>Control by mobile apps>Network access.  After the firmware update, it gets changed to "Limited" which as for as I can tell, only allows Roku apps to control the Roku.  You have to change that to "Enable" to restore Crestron control.

2) Getting several calls where Roku says it is out of memory or very slow (15 minutes) when changing between channels such as Prime to YouTube.  If the Roku has an SD card slot, you can try to expand the memory by putting in a microSD card and formatting it from the Roku menu.  I haven't done it yet but will be trying this on Thursday.  If the Roku doesn't have an SD slot, you might have to replace the Roku.  For another client, I was able to get it working by deleting all the unused apps from the home page.

3) I am still observing the Roku pulling streams from a Crestron dual NAX system.  Causing Roku to receive about 54mbps from the NAXs continuously.  Considering the Roku only as a 100BaseT Ethernet connection, it is using a significant amount of the Roku's bandwidth. Doesn't happen with all Rokus.  One client , who has about 10 Rokus, has two of them pulling streams from the NAX.  Not sure what is causing it.  May be some App on certain Rokus or it my be model dependent.  If client has issues, I just plan to put the Roku on a separate VLAN from the NAX.

If anyone has any other insights into the issues, I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,
Steve

For issue 3 Maybe try blocking all multicast to the network port of the Roku's. I wonder if it will also fix the issue with 2.

Thanks Eric.  Unfortunately the Ethernet switch I am using does not allow me to block Multicast traffic on specific ports.  Putting the two Roku's pulling Multicast streams from the NAX on a separate VLAN would be relatively easy to do with the existing hardware.

1, 2, and 3 are all on different Rokus at different job sites.  The ones with slow loading time are not  pulling streams from the NAX.

I can confirm Steve's reporting of issue number one as I have clients calling. :-(  Some more detail:
-This seems to have been enabled between Roku v14.0 and v14.1, My testing was done on an Ultra 4640X.
-In Crestron Home the device will appear as online under pairing but will be uncontrollable (the old trick of changing the port away from 8060 and back does not work).
-Clarifying Steve's post, the menu path is Settings>System>Advance system settings>Control by mobile apps>Network access

Once you change the setting to "Enabled" Crestron will reconnect immediately.  No rebooting or restarting of anything required.

-Jim

Steve, thanks for letting us know about issue 1. I’m sure it saved me a couple of hours on Friday when I had my first service call for that issue.

Update. It seems that firmware 14.1.4 does not have this issue.

Just to follow up, installing a 32GB Sandisk microSD card fix the issues with my client's Roku that was having out of memory issues.

So on new project. Roku on 14.1 is enabled. But only works upon reboot of CP4 for at most 2 commands. Confirmed that IP address is correct, and Enable is chosen. Roku on 14.0 works fine. Going back to IR for control. But we still have no issues via navigating the icons on the TSR-310. WTF!!!

They have 14.3 out, did you try it?

So what isn't working for you?

Strange. The Roku we set up last night went to 14.1. The Roku we set up this morning went to 14.0.4.
There was no navigation of hard buttons on the TSR-310 on 14.1, but we could navigate the scrolling list on the touchscreen.
No issues on 14.0.4. But to be safe, we went to IR.

That seems like it was still set on limited instead of enabled

Existing setup? I had to update the Roku device driver. That restored control on my demo system.
