Whitetail Environmental, LLC is seeking qualified Archaeological Field Technicians for archaeological surveys and investigations at Wright Patman Lake, Texas. Under direct supervision, the Candidate will participate in archaeological surveys and excavation; collect, record, and interpret archaeological data in the field; and assist with laboratory processing and analysis activities. The Candidate will also assist in the preparation of final descriptive, analytical, and technical reports for publication.
Fieldwork duration is expected to be 10-12 months over multiple mobilizations and will consist of pedestrian survey with shovel testing and unit excavation. Candidates will be expected to carry their own measuring tape (metric required), trowels, backpack, water bottles and lunch/snacks. Comfortable hiking boots and long-sleeved shirts/pants are highly recommended.
Hourly pay rate ranges from $18.00 to $23.00 based on qualifications and experience plus $4.57/hour Health and Welfare benefit. Lodging and meal per diem are provided by the company.
Qualifications (Education and Experience): Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, paleontology, or a related field. At least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Boat operation experience and ability to gain Texas Boater Education Certificate (preferred). Ability to walk 4 to 8 miles a day for survey work, excavate shovel tests (35 cm in diameter and up to 100 cm deep), screen dirt from 10- 20 cm levels through a ¼” mesh screen, and use hand-held devices to record shovel test depth, soil characteristics and Munsell colors by level, and describe any artifacts found at each level. Ability to identify, describe and record precontact and historic period artifacts. Ability to assist with writing and/or co-authoring archaeological survey reports, site forms, excavation reports, and analysis reports for publication. Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems or equivalent and MS Office software packages or equivalent.
Additional Eligibility Requirements: Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license Must be able to obtain and maintain Department of Army background investigation Must have U.S. citizenship Must be able to pass Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
Direct Reports: No supervisory role
Travel: Candidates will be expected to travel (time paid, no mileage) to the project location on the day fieldwork starts.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: Part-time position with schedule based on field mobilizations determined by Principal Investigator and Archaeological Crew Chief.
