Why Monitor Activity?
There are valid reasons for monitoring the activity on your wiki, they include but are not limited to:
- Check content to ensure it meets the group's standards of conduct
- Verify content fits within the group's scope
- Check for duplicate pages
- Check formatting
- Check links
- Check for copyright infringement
- See who is actually using the wiki
- Helps to see if it is being used by the group as a repository
- To encourage their continued participation
- To help them with technical aspects
Viewing Wiki Activity
To view wiki activity, you must be either an Owner or Moderator
NOTE: On individual wikipages that are not locked there is a link in the upper right hand corner with the date of the last edit and how many revisions. Anyone can view and compare the revisions.
Within the Admin sub-menu, Activity is the bottom option.
To view Wiki activity you will have to individually check the following options from the drop-down menu:
- Added image to wiki
- Added wikipage
- Deleted image from wiki
- Deleted wiki revision
- Deleted wikipage
- Modified wikipage
The Role of Moderator
What should be our reaction when someone does something that is "against the rules"?
Getting other people to participate is truly the biggest challenge any wiki creator faces, the problems listed above are secondary.
I have been promoting wikis for over 10 years and have NEVER had anyone do something intentionally malicious.
They have made mistakes, but that is what they were, mistakes, honest mistakes.
Do you want to discourage them? Make them angry? There is a REALLY easy way to accomplish this:
Delete their post.
However, if you want to encourage them to continue to contribute, just change their behavior, there is a much more productive way to do it.
- Communicate privately with them and let them know what needs to be changed, explaining the reasons why.
- Ask them to make the necessary changes.
- Be kind about it.
- Thank them for participating.
Usually a lot of thought and effort goes into creating a wikipage,
Much more than most messages.
Respect their effort.
Dealing with Specific Issues
Violates Standard of Conduct
Suggestion: Depending on the severity of the violation
- Moderate to Severe - Delete the content - Alert Editor explaining how it violated the standard. Quote offensive content if appropriate.
Depending on their reaction you may have to either Moderate all conduct or expel from group - Minor - Alert Editor to the violation and what needs to be addressed and give them a reasonable time frame to fix it (7 days?)
Outside Scope of Group
Suggestion:
- Lock the page (Check the "Only moderators can edit this page." box above the "Save" button.
- Alert the Editor that the content is outside the scope of your group and suggest they 'Find or Create a Group" where they can copy the content to the corresponding wiki.
- Give them a reasonable time to move the content (2 weeks?)
Duplicate Wikipages
We may be tempted to just delete the duplicate page but before we do there are a few things to take into consideration:
- Does the page contain information not included on the original page? This could be:
- Explanations or clarifications
- Links to other wikipages
- Something else?
- Did the Editor(s) link TO that page from from other pages?
Suggestion:
- In the header add the disclaimer "This is a duplicate page, please go to [original page]"
- Lock the duplicate page
- Send a message to the Editor(s) of the page
- Alerting them of the duplication
- Advising them that the duplicate page will be deleted in (30 days would be my choice)
- Asking them to move their content to the original page if it isn't already there
Formatting
For minor issues you can either fix it yourself or encourage them to do it.
Link Checking
The easiest way I know how to do this is by using the Link Analyzer extension in the Firefox web browser.
If you are unfamiliar with the process of installing the extension, Wiki Link Checking explains it step by step
Copyright Infringement
Delete content, alert Editor.
