Don: I think his main concern was about how to turn it on and align it, set
freq range and see SWR, for starters.
I'm sure that the HP and others allow the user to calculate the "solution
to the generalized eigenfenster equation" --- but the info provided with
the nanovna-h4 is a single page with an undecipherable flow chart. Several
others have directed him to the abundant online videos--- they are also
helpful.
I decided to buy one of those H4 items on line--- amazing little package,
especially for the price! [My set of adapters from SMA male/female to UHF
and BNC male/female cost me nearly what the unit cost!]

HP/Agilent/Keysight still have the best application notes on network
analysis and spectrum analysis, both for beginners and for others who want
to dig in further. I still have paper copies of many of the old ones.
