Hello--
I ran into trouble when I attempted to install nanovna-saver in a system running Linux Lite.
Apparently, I'm overlooking some steps that are basic knowledge in Linux or incompatibilities
with Linux Lite.

So, I'm starting fresh with a clean installation of Ubuntu 20.04, but I could really use
a detailed, step-by-step installation procedure. This time around  I'll take notes
and do a better job describing what goes wrong.

In the meantime, is there a detailed instruction procedure someone could point to?

Thanks, and 73--

Roby, Brad,

you could try the procedure in https://groups.io/g/nanovna-users/files/Nano%20VNA%20Saver/nanoVNA-H4%20software%20support%20under%20Ubuntu.pdf. It was written (and tested) on Ubuntu 18.04, but should also work for 20.04. This is because use is made of a Python *virtual environment*. What this does is to establish what amounts to an independent Python installation of 3.7, unaffected by the default Python installation on a machine.

Other options are possible, but not yet investigated.

I am having the same problem, need to install nanovna saver on an Ubuntu 20.04 laptop.
How do I download the PDF instructions; I can't find the file...when I click the link, it doesn't download to phone or laptop.

Downloads fine here, on Windows pc.

Many thanks, the link worked.

I have a nanovna h, not an h4; would that matter?

Also, must the firmware be updated for that program to run?

I don't recall using nanovna-app, nanovna-saver or any of the others on
Ubuntu 20.04.1 or upgrades. BUT, both load and run nearly instantly on
Ubuntu 22.04.1 - 22.04.3 AND on Linux Mint Cinnamon (on converted Apple Mac
Book). I downloaded the pre-compiled program from Git Hub, but the nanovna
site has the link to a package and the pre-compiled program. Just MY
2-cents worth.

I managed to get it running in Kubuntu 22.04, with an early NanoVNA-H and the Ho-Ro fork of DiSlord 1.2.9 firmware.

Many thanks for the info; I looked at the PDF on how to use the nanovna
programs on 20.04 and it was quite involved, install Python and do a ton of
terminal instructions...
So I will try the later Ubuntu with the two nanovna programs you mentioned
and see what happens.

I'm on Fedora 40 here - so I hope these steps are generic enough they'll
also work on 'other' flavors.
I'm not a Python guy, nor any flavor of developer, so there're likely
other/better ways to do this.
This is what I've been doing and so far ::knock on wood:: it's working for
me here.
This is more 'Python' like info than NanoVNA info as I find this works on
quite a few projects (TinySASaver, GQRX, etc)

1 - Visit https://github.com/NanoVNA-Saver/nanovna-saver
2 - Copy git link: https://github.com/NanoVNA-Saver/nanovna-saver.git
3 - Open, as a user, a terminal window on your Python equipped Linux machine
4 - In your home directory, run: git clone
https://github.com/NanoVNA-Saver/nanovna-saver.git <enter>
5 - Now, do a: cd nanovna-saver <enter>
6 - Run: pip install --upgrade . <enter>
#Notice the period there, it's important
7 - Assuming all goes well (it usually does), from that command line run:
nanovna-saver <enter>
8 - Enjoy a refreshing beverage of your choice

9 - (Days, weeks later or never, no pressure), time to check for an update
- open that terminal window and cd into your nanovna-saver folder, again
10 - run: git pull <enter>
11 - run: pip install --upgrade . <enter>
#Notice that period there, it's important
12 - Enjoy your updated nanovna-saver software, start it same way as earlier
13 - Go relax under a shade tree when done - bees are cool

Did you have to do any additional installs such as Python?

Oh yea - that's why I said "Python equipped" machine

But, if you can wrangle the CLI on a Windows box, I bet it'd work pretty
much the same

For the Debian family: apt-get install Python (if it's not installed

For the Redhat flavors: yum install Python (if it's not installed already)

More info:

I had tried the 2 apps (nanovna-app and nanovna-saver) on Ubuntu 20.04 64
bit laptop, and neither ran.

I then downloaded VNA_View-x86_64.AppImage, right clicked it, and ran it.
I got the program GUI, and it saw the nanovna as a device.

But when I selected it to run it, I got a pop-up saying "access denied".

I do have python installed; it's version 3.8.

Many thanks, the link worked.

I have a nanovna h, not an h4; would that matter?

Also, must the firmware be updated for that program to run?

I am having the same problem, need to install nanovna saver on an
Ubuntu
20.04 laptop.
How do I download the PDF instructions; I can't find the file...when
I
click the
link, it doesn't download to phone or laptop.
