New to group; DIY EDM Sinker...is Water OK for DIelectric?

 

Finally getting around to trying to build a sinker EDM.  One thing that has always giving me pause is the use of oil dielectric (smell, messy, fumes).  I recently watched a video (Andy's Machines) where he used DI water and a coffee filter.  I am not looking for absolute precision work; just general hobby stuff and experimenting.  Are any of those out there who have build their own sinker machines running water?

Hi Martin;

 I'm unaware of anyone building a water base dielectric EDM, but again, that doesn't mean it hasn't happen.  Regardless, many folks will use Auggie to attempt to achieve similar results.

I have experimented with both distilled and tap water as a dielectric fluid in a mini-edm machine.  While water works, the tool wear rate has been excessive.  I have been hoping to obtain some non-inflammable fluid for testing, but have not so far.  I have also considered silicone oil, which is non-inflammable, but it comes with its own problems.

Some of my experience with water as a dielectric fluid in the Mini-EDM machine is detailed in a summary written for a microwave electronics group.  I will try to post a copy in the EDM section of the group's files.
