New to group; DIY EDM Sinker...is Water OK for D Ielectric?
Martin, You're making a lot of sense. Wire edm's use DI water. There might be a rust issue for sinker tool holders. There might be some electrical shorting issues that dielectric fluid foils too. The surface contact area is different between wire and graphite electrodes. The wire is wearing and the gap is held consistent whereas the graphite... I don't know... You've got a great question. Somebody smarter than me must have the answer. Date: Tue, 31 May 2022 14:29:59 -0700 Finally getting around to trying to build a sinker EDM. One thing that has always giving me pause is the use of oil dielectric (smell, messy, fumes). I recently watched a video (Andy's Machines) where he used DI water and a coffee filter. I am not looking for absolute precision work; just general hobby stuff and experimenting. Are any of those out there who have build their own sinker machines running water? Thanks in advance. |
I just visited a local company who has 6 large wire EDM units cutting some pretty exotic materials. Very high tolerance and finish. The owner uses rain water for his dielectric liquid. Much cleaner and doesn't have the chemicals additives that would mess up the machinery. A typical rain storm of 1" or so gives him a few thousand gallons that is then filtered to get rid of bugs and leaves.
He doesn't want his company name or address listed because of the companies that use his services.
