Position

Archaeological field technicians for intensive pedestrian archaeological survey (Class III Inventory) for various projects on National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands in areas of unsurpassed beauty in Utah!

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring multiple field technicians to help conduct an Intensive Archaeological Pedestrian Survey (Class III Inventory) for several projects in Utah starting in March 2025 weather permitting. This pedestrian surveys are expected to be conducted in 8-day field sessions (8 days on, six days off) and last approximately three months. These positions have potential for long-term, permanent employment for the driven, collaborative, and reliable archaeologist. The ideal candidate will have experience with Class III pedestrian surveys in Utah or surrounding areas, an understanding of the prehistoric archaeological record of Utah and/or the Great Basin, familiarity with digital data collection, and an appreciation for the importance of efficiency and teamwork in pedestrian survey workflows.

This work is scheduled to begin as soon as weather conditions permit, but tentatively in mid-March to mid-April 2025. The project will commence in two 8-day field sessions (10 hour days) with 6 days off in between. The accommodations will be a combination of hotels and camping.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $24 and $28, commensurate with experience and attitude. UES is offering $59 per diem plus single occupancy accommodation (for hotel sessions) and $175 per diem (for camping sessions). UES will provide daily transport to and from the project area from crew accommodations. Field techs will be responsible for arranging their travel to and from the project area at the beginning and end of each field session. This opportunity is fast approaching so apply today! Responsibilities

  • Conduct pedestrian survey using parallel transects under the supervision of a UES field director.
  • Identify both precontact and historic-era archaeological isolates and sites.
  • Record isolates and site boundaries using digital recording platforms.
  • Perform cursory artifact analysis (e.g., quantification, attribute analysis, photographs, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to walk long distances over rugged terrain in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Basic proficiency in navigation/orienting (using a compass and GPS).
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Basic proficiency in digital field data collection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A BA in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field is preferred but is not necessary if the applicant has one or more years of experience in CRM.
  • 3-6 months previous archaeological experience on pedestrian surveys in Utah or other areas of the Great Basin.
  • Familiarity with precontact and historic artifacts of the Great Basin, especially more recent historical features such as wickiups.

Archaeological field technicians for PHASE III Data Recovery/Mitigative Excavation Near DAytona, volusia COUNTY, Florida

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring multiple field technicians to help conduct a Phase III Data Recovery excavation at a precontact habitation site in Volusia County.  This data recovery project is expected to last five weeks with the potential for long-term, permanent employment for the driven, collaborative, and reliable archaeologist. The ideal candidate will have experience with Phase III excavations in the Southeast- with a keen understanding of mitigative methodologies, an understanding of the prehistoric archaeological record of Florida or the Southeast, familiarity with digital data collection, and an appreciation for the importance of efficiency and teamwork in data recovery workflows.

EDR is seeking experienced, team-oriented Archaeological Monitors with interest in transportation/construction observations, conducting machine-aided archaeology, and possible Phase I survey fieldwork. Essential Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, possibly for extended hours (over 8), in a road construction setting.

The anticipated hourly base pay range of $22-23 per hour is commensurate with experience. Responsibilities
  • Prepare cost proposals as requested by clients or in response to solicitations.

  • Strong archaeology project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and quality control.

The PD position is responsible for planning and implementing survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery plans. The PD is responsible for report writing and having a solid understanding of the basics of cultural resource management.

 

For small- and medium-sized projects, the PD may assume additional tasks typically assigned to a Principal Investigator (PI), although you will work under the mentorships of the PI for that project.  For larger projects, the PD will work in tandem with experienced project directors and/or the PI and to ensure that all the tasks associated with project implementation are accomplished.  We will provide the training you will need to meet your deadlines, remain on budget, and meet SRI’s standard of care.

On December 4, 2015, the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) was signed into law. Title 41 of this Act, referred to as “FAST-41”, created a new governance structure, set of procedures, and funding authorities to improve the Federal environmental review and authorization process for covered infrastructure projects. Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians is a Federally recognized Tribe whose reservation is in Shawano, Wisconsin. The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO), tasked with dealing with Section 106 and FAST-41 related projects, is based out of Williamstown, Massachusetts. The FAST-41 Project Specialist will provide dedicated project review and GIS management capabilities in support of the Tribe’s effectiveness with cultural resource consultations for FAST-41 projects. Subject to annual renewal for 2 years contingent on continued funds.

ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN – preparation of Historical Report for a building built in 1954 before demolition works. The project is in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. More detailed requirements below:

 

“Building FN 901 was built in 1954 and served as the HQ and main air
terminal. Due to its historical significance, it requires the preparation
of a Historic Structure Report to include a history of the building and
its functions along with photos of the interior and exterior prior to
demolition.
Existing historical resources within the work area are shown on the
drawings. Protect these resources and be responsible for their
preservation during the life of the Contract.”

 

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MONITORING – monitors the site during excavation works as required. More detailed requirements below:

 

“The Contractor is required to provide an archaeologist to conduct

archaeological monitoring during excavation and other earthwork

processes.  The archaeologist shall meet the Secretary of the Interior's

Professional Qualifications (US Department of the Interior 1983).  The

lead archaeologist will have at least 5 years of experience supervising

archaeological fieldwork, overseeing lab analysis and curation, and

authoring final reports.  The lead archaeologist must be on Kwajalein

Island conducting and overseeing archaeological fieldwork for all

excavation activities.  All archaeological field work and lab work will be

conducted by archaeologists who meet the Secretary of the Interior's

Professional Qualifications (US Department of the Interior 1983).

 

If, during excavation or other construction activities, any previously

unidentified or unanticipated historical, archaeological, and cultural

resources are discovered or found, activities that may damage or alter

such resources will be suspended.  Resources covered by this paragraph

include but are not limited to:  Any human skeletal remains or burials;

artifacts; shell, midden, bone, charcoal, or other deposits; rock or coral

alignments, pavings, wall, or other constructed features; and any

indication of agricultural or other human activities.  Upon such discovery

or find, immediately notify the Contracting Officer so that the

appropriate authorities may be notified and a determination made as to

their significance and what, if any, special disposition of the finds

should be made.  Cease all activities that may result in impact to or the

destruction of these resources.  Secure the area and prevent employees or

other persons from trespassing on, removing, or otherwise disturbing such

resources.  The Government retains ownership and control over

Project Archaeologist position | EDR | Western New York State | Fulltime

 

EDR is seeking an experienced, team-oriented Project Archaeologist

 

This role is a full-time staff position, based in Western New York. Our Project Archaeologists provide support to the Cultural Resources practice area by managing and directing archaeological field crews, coordinating with senior staff, writing, conducting research, mapping—including geographic information systems (GIS) analysis—and preparation of final deliverables that meet EDR’s standards of quality.

 

The qualified candidate will have:

  • Strong writing and verbal skills with a demonstrated ability to prepare cultural resources reports and communicate the results to clients.
  • At least 5 years of experience directing cultural resources investigations in New York, the Northeast, and/or mid-Atlantic states.
  • Strong geographic information systems (GIS) skills.
  • Subject matter expertise in North American archaeology
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal and state regulatory processes (e.g., NEPA, Section 106, Section 14.09, SEQRA).

 

In addition, this position will require:

  • Supervision of archaeological field crews.
  • Regular use of ArcGIS, MS Office, a relational database for archaeological collections management, and global positioning system (GPS) equipment and associated applications, .
  • Ability to travel for site visits and occasional field work, both locally and out of state, if necessary. 

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Have strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Work well with other disciplines in a team environment and be able to negotiate multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Have a bachelor’s and/or a graduate degree in anthropology, history, or related discipline.

 

The anticipated base pay range of $55,000-$65,000 per year is commensurate with experience. EDR reserves the right to pay outside of the target range based on an individual’s education, credentials, skill level and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity, geographic location, and business needs.

Body:

 

Whitetail Environmental, LLC is seeking qualified Archaeological Field Technicians for archaeological surveys and investigations at Wright Patman Lake, Texas. Under direct supervision, the Candidate will participate in archaeological surveys and excavation; collect, record, and interpret archaeological data in the field; and assist with laboratory processing and analysis activities. The Candidate will also assist in the preparation of final descriptive, analytical, and technical reports for publication.

 

Fieldwork duration is expected to be 10-12 months over multiple mobilizations and will consist of pedestrian survey with shovel testing and unit excavation. Candidates will be expected to carry their own measuring tape (metric required), trowels, backpack, water bottles and lunch/snacks. Comfortable hiking boots and long-sleeved shirts/pants are highly recommended.

 

Hourly pay rate ranges from $18.00 to $23.00 based on qualifications and experience plus $4.57/hour Health and Welfare benefit. Lodging and meal per diem are provided by the company.

 

Qualifications (Education and Experience):

Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, paleontology, or a related field.

At least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Boat operation experience and ability to gain Texas Boater Education Certificate (preferred).

Ability to walk 4 to 8 miles a day for survey work, excavate shovel tests (35 cm in diameter and up to 100 cm deep), screen dirt from 10- 20 cm levels through a ¼” mesh screen, and use hand-held devices to record shovel test depth, soil characteristics and Munsell colors by level, and describe any artifacts found at each level.

Ability to identify, describe and record precontact and historic period artifacts.

Ability to assist with writing and/or co-authoring archaeological survey reports, site forms, excavation reports, and analysis reports for publication.

Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems or equivalent and MS Office software packages or equivalent.

 

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license

Must be able to obtain and maintain Department of Army background investigation

 Must have U.S. citizenship

Must be able to pass Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

 

Direct Reports: No supervisory role

 

Travel: Candidates will be expected to travel (time paid, no mileage) to the project location on the day fieldwork starts.

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: Part-time position with schedule based on field mobilizations determined by Principal Investigator and Archaeological Crew Chief.

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Overseeing workflows related to archaeological collections to assure quality control, staff productivity and appropriate training, and compliance with deadlines and budgets, to include the work of Collections Coordinators and Lab Technicians.
  • Responsible for accuracy, legibility, and completeness of all laboratory documents, as well as accuracy and completeness of reports and other deliverables.

The successful candidate must have:  Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in anthropology, archaeology, history, museum studies or closely related field and at least three (3) years of relevant work experience, one (1) of which was at a supervisory level.

 

The ideal candidate will have any/all of the following:

 

  • Knowledge with/experience in compliance with applicable cultural resource laws including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
  • Understanding of generally accepted archaeological laboratory methods and procedures
  • Working knowledge of the material culture of the Mid-Atlantic
  • Experience with the standard analysis methods for a variety of artifact types
  • Knowledge of US History and the National Register of Historic Places Criteria,
  • Experience with federal (36 CFR 79) and state curation standards
  • Familiarity with alternative lab analysis and preservation methodologies, including x-radiography, electrolysis, and other stabilization methods
  • Knowledge of state historic preservation office guidelines throughout the service area
