A day at sea
Hi gang----message 2 from Tony huz and co de g4faa ( sat eve) HNY alll! ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <tony.cadney@...> Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2024 at 18:43 Subject: A day at sea To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Hello fellow radio ops, Tomorrow we have a sea day as we will be on way to Arrecife Lanzarote and we hope to be on the radio most of the day weather permitting. Unfortunately although we have already had a number of QSOs on differing bands we have not been able to formulate enough data on the propagation to make fixed schedules. This partly because most of our operating time has been whilst in port with ship moored in very close to very high ground and mountainous areas which screened clear paths to the horizon. Making operating difficult, as Colin G0UJK will testify to. We intend to start on 18Mhz then move up to 21Mhz and on to 24Mhz. Best to check the Reverse Beacon Network to find what band we are working. If conditions allow we will QSY to SSB frequencies 18.130 , 21.285, & 24.950.........All these will be +/- 5khz..........Sorry we can't be more accurate. We will now be working our way back to the UK slowly via Lanzarote, Madeira then Lisbon then crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean and Central America......So plenty of rare squares to work over several weeks. Hope catch you on the wireless! 73 es HNY de Tony and Suzanne

Clifton Pre-Christmas net
3
Whatho fellow Cliftonaires, Just to continue the tropic of a ‘seasonal net’ raised by Lawrie G4FAA and circulate it via both the ‘G3GHN reflector’ and the Clifton Country Club e-mail list. So apologies to those who will receive a duplicate of this mail. It seems that the idea of an impromptu net this coming Thursday 12th Dec. at around 12noon on 7.170 Mhz +/- has met with the approval of some already……….Good News! The more the merrier, therefore if you can spare the time and drag yourselves away from wrapping gifts or working out which bulb has failed on the several sets of Christmas tree lights and to quote Martin G0DCG, the great bard of the Clifton “Just stay RELAXED” and join us on 40m this Thursday. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lawrie for initiating the idea and for selecting the frequency. Lawrie having had speak with the ‘radio god’s who have promised us a clear frequency. Hoorah! Oh yes, you may also be interested a 30mins programme on BBC Radio 4 this evening (8/12) at 19.15 about the high speed Morse competition held in Tunisia. It should be a good listen…Featuring operators from all parts of the globe.…..It is extremely good to hear that our hobby and in particular the skill Morse code is being featured. If you miss this opportunity to listen it will be broadcast again on Thursday 12th Dec at 09.30 & 20.05 Hrs on the BBC World Service either on line or for the SWL’s on 6.195 Mhz. For those who are unable not to make the 40m net…….My I take this opportunity to wish a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful 2025 Catch you on the wireless! 73 de Tony es Suzanne

Hi everyone I entered the RSGB 2m contest in November as Clifton ARS. I’m not in any other club these days. The good news is that “we” won the open section even though I only operated on the Sunday. There was a spectacular tropo opening and I worked loads over 1000Km. Best Dx was a HA. i don’t recall this contest being a Clifton event in the 90s! Cheers Steve. M0BPQ

Over the horizon Radar
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <tony.cadney@...> Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2024 at 09:09 Subject: Over the horizon Radar To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Greetings fellow radio ops, We are now off the coast of North Africa approx. 150miles west of Algiers on a heading of 82 degrees making 16.5knts towards Syracuse Sicily We have made some good contacts both in CW & SSB. Including working Colin G0UJK and Peter G7ULL together with a number of G-stns and North Europeans on both 12m & 15m The best DX so far was on 15m working CW into JA, if this was our first QSO. Again we are having problems with the 17m coil for the antenna........Suzanne and I have dismantled it and are hopeful that we can rectify the fault...... We have found severe QRM on 15m between 21.260 and 21.295 as a continuous wide band noise.........A number of DL stns told me that this was "Over the horizon radar" Unfortunately, this makes operating on those frequencies impossible.......Therefore we have changed to our preferred operating frequency of 21.285 to 21. 225 +/- 5Khz We now have two sea days before Sicily we should be on 12m around 24.906 or 24.960 +/- 5kHz or on 15m 21.225 or 21.058 +/- However being a weekend contests may mean we are more likely to be found on the non-contesting bands........ Do check the Reverse Beacon Net to see if we are operating on a particular band, OK I know its CW but we will QSY to our SSB options on a regular basis. Since the CME from the Sun on Wednesday evening the bands have been very turbulent. such that yesterday every QSO was very difficult totally unlike to previous two days. A note for Peter G7ULL............You are now on all our mailing lists Peter, and we hope to work you again soon. On sea days we will endeavour to be on the air from about 0900hrs GMT but sometimes earlier. DO keep a watch on the Reverse Beacon Net especially as conditions are rather ‘unsettled’ Catch you on the wireless! 73 de Tony es Suzanne

tony huz and suzanne off on the briny again! the Med this time --
herewith message no 1 de Lawrie G4FAA ( sept 11th) ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <tony.cadney@...> Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2024 at 21:07 Subject: At sea again! To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Hello fellow radio ops. Just an email to let you know that we are on another nautical adventure, this time to warmer climes, namely the eastern Mediterranean. We left Dover on 9th September and have gained permission to operate from 'the master of the vessel' and deployed the antenna. Today we made our first contacts on 15m and later on 12m. We are presently off Portugal and have a sea day tomorrow arriving in Gibraltar on 13th September. We then leave for Syracuse arriving 16th Sept. Following our experience on the last voyage of losing our access to BT Mail and being unable to circulate information we now have an account with G-mail as a 'back-up' In the meantime you are likely to find us on 15m in the mornings and on 12m in the late afternoons on or near our preferred frequencies of 21.058 or 21.285 and 24.906 and 24.960. all are +/- up to 5Khz. It is worth checking the Reverse Beacon Network to see what band we are active on even if you are a SSB only op. We will endeavour to call CQ on the SSB frequencies after calling on the CW frequencies. We hope to give a more definitive schedule once we find what conditions prevail Hope catch you on the wireless soon, 73 fer nw de Tony es Suzanne

Back on dry land!
Hi all- final missive from the sailors -- explains the lack of comms during their voyage! Suggest sunday 22 nd dec - 2pm on 40 or 80m ( 7.175 or 3.775mhz) +/- .... Begin forwarded message: From: tony.cadney@... Date: 3 August 2024 at 21:30:54 BST To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Subject: Back on dry land! Greetings fellow radio ops, As we have now returned from our nautical meanderings to Iceland & Greenland, this e-mail is by the way of an apology for lack e-mails and updates during those /MM ops. Following our initial ‘group mail’ on gaining the captain’s permission and a subsequent mail on 16th July we lost access to our ‘BT mail’ account which held the ‘MM’ group addresses. The reason for the breakdown is still unknown, but we did share this experience with a number fellow passengers who also could not access their BT accounts. On one occasion on 17th July we used Suzanne’s G-mail account inputting all the addresses we could recall manually, again apologies to those who were omitted. We have now decided to set up a dedicated G-mail account for our /MM group to run as an alternative to BT mail on future trips. The combination of atrocious weather and dire propagation made every QSO a real struggle, consequently we made just over 100 QSOs 98% were in CW Even so, the majority of the QSOs suffered from very deep and destructive QSB such that even a 599 contact would degrade to barely readable in a matter of seconds. We found we had a problem with the auto ATU on the KX3 with the radio showing it as “not installed”. Fortunately as we resonate the G-whip antenna to specific bands or specific parts of a band (normally CW allocation) we rarely need to use the ATU. The only exception is when we tune ‘outside’ the resonant envelope for example moving up to the SSB frequencies on 10m and 15m etc. However, since returning home the KX3’s auto ATU has worked faultlessly. I strongly suspect the extremely penetrating damp conditions experienced when operating on the open deck caused the non-compliance and malfunction. One thing the KX3 lacks is a waterproof case. The pervasive wet conditions also took their toll on the 17m loading coil for the antenna which went chronically ‘off song’. This produced the most amazing graphics on the display of the AA600 antenna analyser. Again, since drying out all is back to normal. Some remedial work to further waterproof the loading coils is scheduled before our next nautical jaunt. Saying that, our next nautical adventure is a few weeks hence, when we intend to be in the Eastern Mediterranean. However, we are keeping a close watch on the geo-political situation in the middle-east as this may cause the geographical area of the voyage to be radically altered. Whatever happens we will keep you appraised as to progress. 73 fer nw de Tony es Suzanne

Update from HUZ
Hello Steve, We are having difficulties here with email as our laptop will not communicate with BTmail. All our group addresses are held on the BT system, that includes the addresses of " Clifton maritime mobile" which means now we cannot circulate the group. The last mail sent on Suzanne's tablet using her Gmail a/c when we had type in all the addresses individually this took ages. I am sending this to you so that you maybe able to circulate those members who are on the G3GHN reflector. Since our QSO on 20m we have been surrounded by icebergs in fact as type this several hundred bergs are visible most large enough to do serious damage to the ship. Hence we are weaving through this 'ice field'. Two of our ports of call have been cancelled . Colin (G0UĴK) emailed me to say although he saw me on me on the RBN he could not hear me. Poor conditions and being located in deep mountainous fjords are probably the reason. Saying that, we have had the occasional good contact, namely into Japan and UK and the USA. We intend to be on the air most days, mainly in CW on 15, 20 and 30m, wx permitting. Thanks for circulating this via G3GHN. 73 de Tony es Suzanne.

Suzanne and I have just retreated from the icy blast on the rear of deck 11 after working Steve M0BPQ on 20m the bands appear to be very poor shape. My signal report to Steve was 559 with QSB although he was having great difficulty with my signals resulting in a 319 report. The condition outside are so unpleasant we ceased ops for the day. Although we did have time to resonate the G-whip vertical on 18mhz using the 15mtr loading coil together with a very long tuning element. This means the G-whip is just over 3.5mtrs tall and moves well in the windy condition. The ship is now staying off the coast due ice and the risk of icebergs. We saw some medium to small “growlers” this morning float past the ship. Icing has now caused us to change our next port of call from Qaqortoq to Paamiut. Rest assured we will make every effort to operate, but the WX will have to improve somewhat. We will keep you appraised as to ops. but also keep watching brief on the ‘Reverse Beacon Network’ to see when we are working. 73 fer nw de Tony es Suzanne

At leaving Isafjordur (TF) yesterday at 1900hrs GMT. Unfortunately, although the WX in Isafjordur was sunny and warm (14c) the radio conditions were extremely difficult due to the proximity of mountains surrounding the port. So no radio contacts and very few stations heard. However, the WX conditions allowed us to get the bikes out go for a 25mile ride along the coast, superb scenery, amazing vistas of snow covered peaks. Today and tomorrow we are at sea on the way to our next port of Qaqortoq (OX). The weather today is particularly unpleasant driving rain, thick mist and the temperature hovering round 8c. Not ideal for operating on the open deck. After saying we would be on 18Mhz we consequently found that the loading coil for 18Mhz has gone off song, we think it is due the ingress of water. In the short term this will stop our access to 18Mhz. Annoyingly we use both the 14Mhz and the 18Mhz coils in series to resonate our antenna on 10Mhz………So we are experimenting with some different combinations of coils and lengths of elements trying a resonate the G-whip on 10Mhz. All this requires spending time out in the open on deck 12 and at present the current WX precludes this. As a result, we now only have access to 10,12,15 and 20m. This morning we only managed a couple of contacts on 20m one in CW to DL and second in SSB to G-land. Before the WX drove to shelter inside. We will keep you appraised as to progress but the bands appear to very unstable with extremes of QSB……….Therefore no fixed skeds yet. WX update: We are now in very thick fog and outside temperature has dropped to 6c 73 es gud dx from the North Atlantic de Tony es Suzanne

G3GHN

Hi everyone, Are G3GHN and G8GHN still valid calls? Is there any objection to me using them in a contest this weekend? There will just be a handful of contacts. There is an incentive to work the RSGB GR2HQ contest station on as many bands as possible so I would like to wheel out as many calls as I legitimately have access to. Cheers Steve
