Модерується DUO 900 sailing pictures 20
Hi Domenico Thank you for the nice photos. I like the picture, boat in port and the house on top. So like Vieste some kilometers away. History A good selection of pictures. How easy, difficult is it to set the wing-mast. Any idea about the weight? How is it sailing with the wing-mast? Because we used a wing-mast on a P95. We were to Vlissingen in wind force 7. Making 8 knots. Not a good situation with the strange ebb flow there and against wind waves. It would have being not so difficult with a normal mast (less speed) I see you shortened the main sail already, but there was not much wind. A test? How is the boat handling? A lot of questions, when you have time Ciao Bernd

Модерується KD 860 built in Ukraine 2
Hello Gregor Thank you for the photos. It is so good to see, that even in war stricken Ukraine normal work is going on. A time ago, you had already sent some pictures. In flashes I was thinking about your project in the Ukraine. Nice to see now, that there is still some "Normalität“. I hope this dammit war ends as quick as possible. Anyway, thanks again Bernd

Модерується ECO 6 Videos 4
Good afternoon, fellow K-Design builders, in case you have not seen it somewhere else, I published today a video of the ECO 6 sailing this past season. Check it out on my YouTube channel https://youtu.be/pOzGXYDF18k On my channel there is also a video of the building process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNo16UO28ZA And earlier this fall, I posted a video of the annual Elbow Run. I have organized this gathering for the past 13 years. It is week long event and welcomes any and all sailboats. The reservoir lake is called Lake Diefenbaker and stretches 225 kilometres along the South Saskatchewan River valley which was flooded in the 1950's. The ECO 6 took part in this year's event and plans to do so next year. If you are an armchair sailor like I am at this time of year, my channel has videos of all 13 seasons. Here is the video for 2024. https://youtu.be/P47HxGx0UlY

Duo 1000 project for sale 13
Hi group, I hate to write this message. But I must be real, I don't have time to finish the DUO 1000. Life happened... So now this makes an opportunity for an other builder. Pictures of my build are on the website of Bernd: https://ikarus342000.com/DUO1000page.htm One hull nearly finished, the other one has finished bulkheads, just line them up and put the stringers and skin. The difficult to make aftbeam is ready. Rudderblades too. Lots of materials to finish the boat. Like alle the wood, windows, two new yamaha 10 HP outboard engines, winches etc. I have build quite some boats and the building quality is more than adequate. Bernd can vow for that as we have been building boats together. In fact I learned good tricks from him! For a single mast setup there is a complete rigging, including brand new sails (laminated tapedrive), main, furler genoa, code zero, and a damaged genacker (a nail in the floor did a good job, but you can repair it). For a double mast setup (the most spectacular option of course, but more work) there are two huge flagpoles as a basis to build the free rotating masts. This will make a spectacular fast and safe catamaran! I guess it will take about 1400 building hours to sail. The boat is in the Netherlands. If you are seriously interested you can drop me a message.

Модерується Pelican
Hi Bernd and hi to all. First, I remember seeing a sideview drawing of the Pelican with straight bows AND showing the cabin "redan" running the all length of the hull, just like on Pete Hill's Oryx catamaran. I believe it was the latest version of the Pelican design. Am I imagining it or does it exist? Secondly, It seems your latest designs, (Duo 105, Voyager, Duo 10) all use rather smaller cross section stingers, than the one showing on the Pelican build in Indonesia. (see photos of Indonesian build). if you had to design the pelican Today, Wouldn't you use smaller crossed section stinger too? (saving weight and not loosing too much strength) I am in no way insinuating Pelican is overbuild! Just want to no if there are any update on the design. friendly regards, C.

Модерується Hello. kd860. Lots of questions 22
Hello Everyone. Hope this message finds everyone happy and in good health. I just purchased the study plans for the KD860. a.) I would like to build this out of foam and carbon fiber , s-glass with west/ISOcertified epoxy. Are there alternate plans that I can buy. b.) Are there any singaporeans here , can I meet you up in person , and ask for your experience. Dinner , fooding , drinks on me. c.) The mast location , is presently in the middle of the beds , seemingly , its load unsupported. Can I move the mast to the cabin bulkhead instead , and have the load resting and distributed spread against the bulkhead. d.) I would like to power the boat with inboard , shaft drive , 2 diesels nanni n2.14 , they are 92KG each , how do I compensate this weight on the boat. e.) I would like to have hydraulic steering on the boat , 3 steerings , one on each side , and one in the cabin. Can anyone share your experience with the valving after each helm pump. f.) Is duckworks the only place I can buy the plans from ? g.) Is the beam 5.6 m ? I can see corrections to it afterwards. I'm assuming it is from the outside of the hull. Thank you , and looking forward to be part of the community. Salut. Hamka

Iused to own a Wharram Tiki 30 with a pod and I am looking for a design with more comfort which can be trailerable to launch site approx 1000kh away. There will be be a crew of 2 or 3 experienced people building and I would like to finish in 1 year. Can you recommend a design . Thank you Pst

Модерується Resizing plans of Eco 520 10
I am very appealed by instead of building eco6 to rescale eco 520. But thinking that is there some foreseeable challenges that comes from resizing the plan? 520 appeals to me because of the simplistic sails that can be furled as much as neccessary. Easy operation and easy fixing, looking to build boat that would last from father to son when well kept. Is resizing and option or is it just bad idea?

KD 860 FI 42
Hello (Once again) summer has come to Finland and I can go on with my KD 860. I have glassed and applied the putty all over the boat. Now there’s some fairing to do. Entrance hatches are also almost done. I have spent about 1200 hours during these six years and now I got the feeling that some day I will see my boat afloat. I have a couple of questions for you Bernd if you don’t mind: I don’t understand the rudder gudgeons setup. In Fig. 21 there’s U-profile with 3mm holes. But in description there stands “M6 screws”. And what is “lower gudgeons rudder” in Fig. 31? So shall I use the U-profiles and screw them to rudder housing with wood screws? Or is there enough room for 6mm machine screws? What about the cockpit drainage? Is four holes enough? What size? Best regards Pete

Модерується Again, Group payment 20
Hi All Funny, the time is flying. Another year that the group exists is over. When I look at the statistics of the group in general, there was not a lot of input. For a year, I was proposing to input my sailing experience. The animo was nihil. On the building site. Also, not much activity. I mentioned it shortly; I also had some personal issues. For a time, it was impossible to maintain the page, and I am thinking: Is it still worth to maintain the group? As you will know, the old group under Yahoo was free. Here it is not, and I have to pay in one of the next days. It would be nice when you could share in the costs. And what you are thinking, in general, is whether it is worth continuing with the group. Bernd If you would like to share the costs. Send your contribution to PAYPAL and this is the recipient. bernd@...

What happened to Bernd's website? Did I miss something? It would be a shame if there was no longer this detailed information on the individual K-Design models.

Модерується Objectivity by boating magazine reports 2
Got today an email from Multihull World magazine with this title “Meet our partner Windelo Catamarans at the Annapolis Boat Show” And here we go, PARTNER. Yes, they write for companies and not for the readers. And they do this for all the boat manufacturer's. There the get paid. So what can you expect from their reports, tests etc. Nothing!

Модерується Eco6 3
Hello everyone. I've been building an Eco 6 all by myself since March. So far I've been through some difficulties, such as a long rainy season and a really serious flood in my city. I discovered that the construction is actually much slower than I planned, but it gives me a lot of pleasure to do it. I'm attaching some photos.

SC435 video 3
Hi, I've recently built the SC435 and I love it! You can see a short video (1.6 MB) in the Files section. The video is far from «How to sail», but at this moment it is the only one I have. Besides, I am novice sailor as well as novice boat builder :) Every advice/comment is welcome.

Модерується E-Glass vs S-Glass + Epoxy Resin Specifications 4
Hello, I would be happy to know, what glass type and weave are usually meant in the plans (DUO 480 in my case). For example - if in the materials list written 220gr glass, what is the glass type (E-Glass or S-Glass) and weave (Twill, Bi-Axial 45-/45+, etc...) should be used. Another question is regarding epoxy specifications. There is an extremely cheap resin sold in my area named KUKDO YD-128, which is 4-5 times cheaper than other brands. But the specifications are 30% weaker. Would the numbers suffice for a build like DUO 480, or should the best available epoxy used? Thanks alot, Eli.

DUO for South East Asia 23
Hi all, I am Alain. I live in Singapore, moving to Thailand hopefully by end of the year where I am planning to build a boat. This is my first post on this forum. I have been looking around for different possibilities and, at this point, I have narrow it down to Bernd Kohler's catamaran designs after considering James Wharram's Tiki range for a while. At this stage, I am basically looking to build my own training ground to progress toward getting a larger boat for liveaboard and long distance travel. For now it will be local costal cruising and a few passages across the region. I want a simple boat that is comfortable in tropical climate with a lot of desk space and with some sheltered area for sun and rain. When I look at the K-Designs range I am attracted by a few models: 1) DUO1000: I like the permanent rigid bimini and rigid deck as well as the general design and accommodation however this is going to be too costly and large for my purpose 2) DUO900: I like the lack of daggerboard, the overall design with the relatively wide cabins and the cockpit protected right behind the companionway but I am not too keen on the tarpaulin at the center of the boat and feel the hull might be unnecessarily narrow when compared to the asymmetrical designs of KD650 and KD122. I ordered the study plan a couple of hours ago. 3) DUO800S: I like the biplane rig but I am not keen on the central pod and there is not enough space in the hulls without it. I ordered the study plan a couple of months ago as it was my initial pick. So now I am envisioning a DUO900 with a few modifications: a biplane rig, possibly a junk rig for that Asian vibe, low cost and ease of use hulls having the same aspect ratio as KD122 to be able to carry more weight and focus on comfort rather than ultimate performance and possibly a slightly wider cabin with a 1.5m beam as there is not too much trouble driving a 3m wide trailer a couple of time a year if needed. If I wanted something really trailable and go everywhere I would settle for a Corsair trimaran. with a rigid deck in between the hull with some storage for ground tackle and kit forward and a bench aft some kind of bimini at the rear over the bench/cockpit area were I can also put PV panels on top So here are my questions: there are a few designer that have been doing conversion to junk rig that I could use. Anyone here have done that before? is it possible to "stretch" the hull by 20% sideway, i.e. getting the max beam from 1.25 to 1.5m. while keeping the length the same or slightly longer at the front to keep a fine bow. Is this possible without going through a complete redesign? from the DUO900 video, it looks like that the owner added a rigid deck to his boat. I imagine that the deck will have to be constructed around a core to have enough rigidity. Looking also for information here. For a bimini what would be the best construction, what height, width, position would be recommended. Thank you very much in advance for your reply. Best Regards, Alain
