instructions 4
Does anyone have instructions for a flat kit by Scenery Unlimited of a heavyweight passenger car or combine with open vestibules. I have a kit of the combine but there are a couple of parts I'm not sure where they go. Other than that it is pretty simple, maybe there weren't instructions. Steve Wolcott

new gauge 17
I never seem to have enough coupler height gauges.... so I designed some of my own. The best part is the entire layout is able to be used with the power on. I previously had to turn the power off or check quickly knowing I was shorting. I just love this 3D printer!! Poling (was Baldwin Truck Side Frames?
When Kalmbach needed to illustrate poling a car on an adjacent track, they usually used a file photo taken on the Bath and Hammondsport, a relatively short shortline, from a Trains article in the 1940's. For major yards where poling was more common, some railroads actually constructed poling cars with fixed poles on each corner to be angled out. It was indeed not a safe practice, as sometimes an old or damaged pole would shatter while the brakeman was holding it, or if he didn't get each end of the pole securely in the proper pocket so that it slipped. I don't recall hearing whether the ICC, state regulators, or even the brotherhoods insisted on ending it, but it became increasingly rare by the 1960's. Most poles were reinforced at both ends, but makeshift poles existed, especially on lumbering or industrial operations. Not all poles were supported by brackets at both ends; some had a bracket at one end and a loop on the pole which could be hung from a hook on the tender frame. Baldwin Truck Side Frames? 8
One of my projects for 2025 is a model of B&O Baldwin 9271 which operated on BC&G track in the early 1970s, leased from the B&O by Majestic Mining Co who owned the BC&G by then. I have an undecorated AM Baldwin shell and chassis and have started detailing the shell. Does anyone know if there are correct Baldwin side frames available that could be made to work, perhaps 3D printed? Brooks Stover

Engine with a Story........ 2
Gents..... First the picture, then the story. You are looking at an Omnicon brass import 4-6-0 made by Samhongsa. The tender has been modified cosmetically with the addition of side boards to increase the space for more coal. This was not the typical NYC practice for sure. Also, an SHS plastic modified auxiliary water car (formerly a 2-8-0 tender) is attached which seems to have larger sized lettering compared to the tender. What is going on here? Read the story below. Now the story. In the good old daze, the NYC ran a train north from the Boston area toward Canada. It was a way freight which dropped off cars and picked up cars from various industries along the way. As time went on, the region developed with more and more industries needing service. As a result, the run for this train got longer and longer over time. Eventually, the engine reached a distance (range) limitation due to insufficient water and coal. It could no longer go farther away from its point of origin because of a shortage of water and coal. The NYC saw the potential for future business in the area and considered building new water towers and coaling towers to solve the problem. But those ideas were VERY expensive. Some creative soul came up with the idea of enlarging the coal bunker and adding an auxiliary water car. Which is exactly what the NYC did. See the photo above for confirmation. The larger sized lettering is correct for the year in which the water car was added. The smaller sized lettering is correct for the year in which the tender was painted. Tender lettering increased from 6" to 8" during this time. Looks like a mistake, but it is not. Prototype photos exist for all of this which makes the story provable. Now for the sales pitch: This engine, a remarkably smooth runner, can be yours. It is for sale. Make your best reasonable offer and see if I smile. If my teeth become visible, the engine is yours. The story as well can be yours. If no smile, it stays near the roundhouse shown in the photo. Email preferred. Phone works. Steam Depot "Curve" Drive for RSD-4/5 10
Regular readers of the list are aware I am a sucker for the unusual, so when Bob Werre offered a kit for the RailMaster RSD-4/5 including the Steam Depot drive from the Click collection, I snatched it away. John Agnew has confirmed that he never sold any of his Alco RS-2/3 kits with an RSD drive (and presumably that North Yard or any similar supplier ever made one), but that he sent a number of those kits to John Chappell, owner of Steam Depot, to be sold with the latter's "Curve" drive developed especially for that. I expect there must be others out there, but I KNOW of only one other in existence, and that fully-assembled. I finally got the drive put together and thought to share the result. So far as I know, the original kit included a Sagami motor, but that was missing from my purchase and the firm long out of business, so I adapted a Canon CN-22 motor to replace it. With Sagami and Mashima both out of business, the Canons are the only readily available can motors suitable for most smaller locomotives. As I've noted in previous posts, Steam Depot developed other drives for S scale diesels, including AAR type A switcher sideframes, Alco Blunt side frames, and both Blomberg (EMD) and AAR type B sideframes for road locomotives. Although he went to some trouble to manufacture all from original masters, whoever did those masters apparently didn't allow for shrinkage in casting, so some of them are about 10% undersize. Today’s S Scale project 45
Over the many 20 to 30 years of modeling an S Scale I have always been on the lookout to buy SSL&S Parts. I like to buy kits that some guys have started and failed on are from the estates that somebody is selling. Back around 2011 or 12 I bought, a parts box of all kinds of detail parts. Once I opened it up, I found that a lot of it was for a consolidation with 56 inch drivers so I just kind of put it all back in the box and the other day I decided to go through this box itemize the detail parts and put them in my inventory for future used. Upon doing so I decided to start building the consolidation since I had a set of drivers and side rods and the frame to start from. So scrounging through my inventory. I started to build it and you can see by the picture I have an assortment of parts laid out. I’m at the valve gear step and I just happen to be a Walsherts valve guy and not so much a baker valve Gear guy. After talking to a buddy of mine about the different valve gears, and then he brings up the needle bearing issue and the maintenance that the prototype didn’t have to deal with on Baker valve gear using needle bearings. He really pushed me in the Baker direction. Although the Walsherts valve gear was designed to be on the outside of the locomotive compared to the Stevenson and other valve gear systems allowing the engineer to lubricate everything consistently during operation. The. Walsherts valve gear actually performed very well with low maintenance . But after talking with him and reading his dissertation on Baker and needle bearings I’ve decided maybe to try my hand at a baker valve system on this consolidation. I’m building it for the Meramec Valley lines so I’m referring to this model as a mutt because it’s going to be made up of all the parts that I’ve collected over the years. Upon going through some of my parts that I got from Rusty‘s estate I found a full set of Baker valve gear that looks to me like it came off of an 0-8-0 Overland or consolidation. I am likely to use that , if not, I’m gonna go with the Walsherts valve gear. I can darn put one of those together in my sleep. I should say that all the parts in this picture are out of my inventory of parts including those cylinders. So with all this said, let me know if you want me to post progress pictures. Creative load.......no other like it. 2
Folks....... In my humble opinion, flat cars are..........just flat. Boring is another word I would use for most flat cars. It is the load which is interesting and brings life to a flat model. Get my drift? Bring a bit of life to your layout with a unique flat car load. Like the one in the photos below. Make your best reasonable offer and make me smile. If I smile, we both will be happy. Otherwise, the car remains in California. Email preferred. Phone works. Loizeaux aht SBC // Global daht net 1-650-962-1577 "S"incerely..........Ed Loizeaux -- Ed Loizeaux Los Altos, CA www.nycvd.org

Talkin' Towers.......
Gents......... Let's talk towers. Everyone needs one and maybe two. How many folks actually have one? There are small towers, medium towers and large towers. Take yer pick. Here are some photos of the only remaining towers I have for sale. Others have already been sold, but these remain for some inexplicable reason. Two of them have internal recordings of telegraph sounds. Press the button and hear the dot-dot-dash-dot noises. Cool......Kids think it is a typewriter and so you can impress your son (and wife?) with your telegraph knowledge. Making me smile is easy. Make your best reasonable offer for a tower. No need to hold back during this holiday season. If I like it, I will smile and the tower is yours. If I frown or scowl, the tower remains with me. Email preferred. Phone works. STL File Sharing 15
Group, I would be happy to provide a way to share .stl files on the NASG web site... ...HOWEVER... that would ONLY EVER BE DONE with the full blessing of the owner of the .stl file. If he/she wants to make it available in the public domain, I'd be happy to do so (and provide a good way to list and access them), but I will ABSOLUTELY NEVER store any .stl files on the NASG web site that are not in the public domain. *Everything* that is sent to me for, possible, inclusion on the NASG web site is "vetted" by me for copyright ownership. This includes files, documents, images, etc. (manufacturers' photos and images are excluded, as they get free "advertising" via a link to their site and News announcements in return for my using their photos and images on our web site). We currently have zero .stl files stored on the NASG web site or its server. - Peter (as NASG webmaster). -- Peter Vanvliet (info@...) owner, Fourth Ray Software Houston, Texas https://fourthray.com/ https://pmrr.org/ (personal web site)

3D Household Furniture 5
Here's a question for you 3D designers: I like to furnish the interior of my structures with actual furniture rather than pictures and there seems to be a paucity of S Scale STL files available for download; I have, however, found that there is a lot of 1/12 scale dollhouse STL files available for very reasonable prices. My question is, is there any software that's easy to use that will allow me to place drawer/cabinet fronts on the cabinets before I print them? Thanks, Dale Minard San Diego S-Gaugers Vista, Calif

Caterpillar Tractor Projects Interest 2
Group, I am sending this out to determine interest in having S scale tractors available. There are three items of interest, which might be fabricated by SierraWest Scale Models, if there is enough interest. The first two items are already in SierraWest Scale Models’s inventory in HO and O scales; that would be the Best Sixty tractor and the Hyster logging arch. The cost in S scale would likely be in between the HO and O scale cost, so about $60 for the tractor and $50 for the logging arch. ITEM 3 is to convert a 1943 Japanese Komatsu bulldozer to a Caterpillar Diesel 50 with the LaPlant-Choate hydraulic blade (kit produced 2010). I bought the kit from HobbyLinc for about $15. https://www.tamiya.com/english/products/32565/index.html I put a 1:64 ruler to my kit and found the tracks measure about 16” wide and the length of the tracks on the ground is about 87” which equals the dimensions shown for a Cat D5 (1967 – 1977) on TractorData. https://www.tractordata.com/industrial-tractors/000/5/9/598-caterpillar-d5.html That's the closest I could find dimension data for. At some point, Backwoods Miniatures (BWM) produced the following conversion kits for this Tamiya model. http://www.backwoodsminiatures.com/0n3kits.htm Scroll down about ¼ to 1/3 on the page and you’ll find the item. Here is the description from BWM's website. “NEW! CABLE DOZER and DETAILED ENGINE Conversion for Tamiya's 1/48 scale Japanese Dozer kit. Here's a useful set of pro-moulded resin parts to 'back date' Tamiya's Dozer kit which has a hydraulic blade. Our kit includes parts for the Cable Blade conversion as well as new hoodless bodyside mouldings with open engine compartment to show off the pre-assembled engine also provided. This kit is perfect for hauling our crawler-tracked trailers. Kit costs £24 plus postage, including our seated driver figure.” The one I think is the easiest and closest conversion is the Diesel fifty with LaPlant-Choate blade. Caterpillar (1925-1949) https://classicdozers.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/img_9171.jpg A modeler could use the kit to convert the dozer to either an older cable-pull blade or just change out the engine and keep the LaPlant-Choate hydraulic blade. So, you have a kit that works in O and S scales. BWM closed up in 2016. However, Brett might be able to bring this kit back to market if there is enough interest. Price TBD. Therefore, respond to me directly at rjlee_77019@... if you are interested. -- Richard J Lee Tacoma, WA

GP35 Coupler Pocket & filler 11
Hello, Not sure how I ended up with an odd number of GP 35 Coupler Pocket And Pilot Fillers. I went through all of the emails I kept of orders from Shapeways but did not find the one showing an order of one. Nor did find all of the emails to account for the other 4 pairs that I do have. Good evening, I have purchased several of the SSA ACF 3 bay covered hoppers from Des Plaines. I noticed the cars are really light and was wondering if anyone has added weights to these cars? From looking at the bottom of the car I am not sure I can pry the body off. I think most of the box cars I purchased are heavy enough but not sure if any can be added. Suggestions?
