Manx Electric Railway 6
Hi Guys I wonder if anyone can help me obtain the right book. I am looking to find a drawing of the MER No22 the Bo-Bo electric loco as it was built before it was converted with two wagon bodies added. I think they call it a steep cab design it looks like something that could be useful on an OOn3 layout any other details will be welcome. Regards Colin

Isle of Man "R" Runners and another "Mantainor" wagon on Ebay at reasonable price see end of piece for link 2
Right then , Adding a touch of variation to IOM Freight consists, The "Runners" Primarily for the short lived container experiment (Though they did go on to other uses) Basically the frames from redundant and stripped "Pairs" coaches, with some modifications. 11 of these were made and numbered R1 to R10 the 11th only ever identified by chalk apparently. This followed unsuccessful attempts to carry the containers on M wagons and the lengthened well wagon (even the Crane Jib runner was tried out) So a box shape outside measurements being length 148mm, width 24mm, height 3mm from brass strip or similar (etch sprue, uncut copperclad sleeper etc) Framed at the following centred 9mm from end a piece of 2mm wide horizontally flush with top, 1mm thick Uprights at 17mm and 24mm with a shim of brass above 10mm by 15mm (It does not touch sides and overhangs the uprights evenly) to bring flush at top. brass nut to fasten bogie to is on underside of this 22mm in from end. No it is not central. Horizontal 2mm pieces flush to top are then placed at centres of 29mm 36mm 42mm 50mm 58mm 65mm 74mm. Turn round and repeat from other end til 65mm as 74mm is the central spar. So you end up with a skeletal frame for your containers. A Roxey pairs underframe could be used with a planked deck and Brake wheel for ex F56 (R7?) Rail carrier (I have 1 of these ex Robin Winters as shown in his Isle of Man Railway A Modelers Inspiration) Ditto but no Brake wheel and 2 sections of 2 Plank drop sides with gap in centre for ex F50 (R3?) (I have 1 of these ex Robin Winters) Container or "Mantainor" load the Bachman/Model Rail special 37-950z https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204492561695 Container "Clinch's Brewery" Dapol special https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204972256987 Bachman 36-071 Type A's https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253567357668 Repainted white and print off the following to transfer paper. New from Halling 2
Hi, Guys I have just had an email from Halling and having read it, I think in translation they are now doing a new HOm motor bogie, it is wired for DCC or Analogue, I think I might be investing in one in the new year to try them out, but the best thing is they are cheap https://shop.ferro-train.com/HallingShop/product/home Colin

Shinohara points - for Jamie
Jamie, as I mentioned yesterday during the 00n3 group meeting, Shinohara #6 points are now made by Imon and can be purchased via Scalelink's website in the HOm track category. But this seller in the UK is offering four at a slightly lower price: https://www.ebay.com/itm/335711344059 The CDR locomotive you acquired is a beautiful model. Heartiest congratulations for enjoyment. Martin Tuohy

Ballymena Cushendall and Red Bay Railway Black Hawthorn 0-4-2 saddle tank
This is my latest project. So far I have only just completed the chassis. There is a 009 Society special interest 00n3 group zoom meeting on Wednesday night at 8pm where I shall try and describe making the chassis and just why I am making this locomotive. You do not have to be a member of the 009 Society to join the zoom meeting. Contact Paul Titmuss off line and Paul will send you a link. Kind regards Alan Gee

point motors / manual point levers 7
A question for the collective wisdom of the group: What brand or type of point motor do you use and recommend? Or does anyone still use simple cables and pull-knobs along the fascia, or some other manual device for enjoyable hands-on shunting operation, like the old GEM manual point lever? (https://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Universal-Hand-operated-Point-Levers---PRE--OWNED-p1.html) My current thinking is that such a hands-on experience with GEM point levers would offer great enjoyment. But I don't know anything about the GEM levers and actual performance. The topic of point motors came up in this helpful conversation back in 2021, but the only motor specifically mentioned was that Peco point motors on Castlefinn tended to experience problems after several hours of operation: https://groups.io/g/00n3modellers/topic/81504103 Scalelink offers a SEEP PM-4 point motor for the Shinohara 12mm gauge #6 points: https://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Shinohara_Accessories.html. But about 30 minutes west of where I live, a gentleman makes the "Tortoise" brand of point motors: http://www.circuitron.com/index_files/Tortoise.htm. These seem to be mentioned by many U.S. railway modellers. However, the Scalelink SEEP PM-4 point motors cost about 40% of the Tortoise, and appear to be smaller and straightforward. I'm researching the design of small layout modules on 80" long hollow wood doors, possibly to include Drumshanbo yard on the Cavan & Leitrim Railway's Arigna branch. The track bed would be raised on cork and have visible grade elevations representing the actual locations, if the models can manage. Thank you in advance for any recommendations or sharing of lessons learned. Martin Tuohy

CDR railcar No 4 3
Dear all, I'm pleased to announce that the Backwoods, now N-drive productions, CDR railcar No 4 is nearly ready for re release. There are still a few white metal castings to sort out. I believe that it'll come with a rtr/easy to install mechanism, and the other change is that the roof is now resin along with the seats. As a taster I attach a couple of photos. This version is gauged for 9mm track, the 12mm gauge mech should be available soon. When I know more I'll post the details. Best wishes, Paul -- Modelling narrow gauge railways of character.

Electronic Books
Having had a look at a few of my many model railway books, I would also like to recommend the following book if working with layout electronics is not your thing. It is 'Electronics and Wiring for Model Railway' By Andrew Duckworth ISBN 978 1 7850 0623 4 cover price $ 29.99 (USA) £ 19.99 $ 39.99 (CAN) Amazon UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/Electronics-Wiring-Railways-Andrew-Duckworth/dp/1785006231/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1HH36OSCZYS2T&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.U_wdMOJR6_JtUaTdbzabevUQs1OS-xYk_M6nYDlVfrdwLsMxA_SjWhP2rptJQljyDsGueh9pJLmpBKirjXBNjY4c-X9W6jygco1UIgsz0yW7_zQxF7qejLJCPcGSjfmZxqcdhvBGdNyH90y7XATf813jndRpXbaE75iefuRal7kzPnse28RZ2TnVXA1WuVjECGoV8qfXiSAr_yEfobAIUkMfMbDBtKMldD911QI3I1I.ICmcLdDxEfUgqCaZA6JldUNtd-rENdV0CyVEwxhWsdU&dib_tag=se&keywords=%27Electronics+and+Wiring+for+Model+Railway%27&nsdOptOutParam=true&qid=1730502252&sprefix=electronics+and+wiring+for+model+railway%27+%2Caps%2C77&sr=8-1

Removal of photos showing construction of the Model Engine Works 0-4-2T CVR Sharp Stewart
Dear all, I am trying to clear space for the addition of new photographs on the group site - currently just 40GB left. Next week I'll be removing the majority of photos on how I constructed the MEW Sharp Stewart. The instructions will remain in Files. I will put the photos onto a PDF which will be available on request if required. Some other photos in the 'Photos' section of the group archives will follow - with notification. We still have all the privileges of a 'free' site. I suspect that if we went down the subscription route if by any chance the subscription were not to be paid then all would be lost. With the closure of Shapeways this loco and the new Tralee & Dingle tram No 4 (in original condition) are available from David Hurst as a kit of parts so all is not lost. Whether the other locos from MEW will be similarly modified will depend on demand I imagine - currently they become the realm of model railway real estate ... (probably). If you wish to contact David and do not have his details then please email me in the first instance and I will pass your email address on. Best wishes, Paul

The Bruiser 5
As there does not seem to have been many modelling posting on the site recently I thought I would post up my current modelling project. I am attempting to make a model of the Ballymena and Larne 2-6-0 saddle tank locomotive made by Beyer Peacock and nick named the Bruiser. There is no special reason chosen for having a try at making the Bruiser except that it has bent frames, is a saddle tank, and has a sloping smoke box. Therefore it going to be a challenge. So far I have built the chassis , a list of parts used is attached. Just when I will get the superstructure made only time will tell. However at some point in the future I hope to post pictures of the completed Bruiser for all to see. Kind regards Alan Gee

T&D in 009 (was T&D Loco No 2 and No 5)
Hi John. Just to note that the Chivers’ kits are actually HO scale. I’ve built one myself using a Farish black five chassis in place of the recommended Hall to get the Walscherts valve gear and rebuilt the cab by cutting away the HO bits and grafting in bits cut from another white metal Hunslet kit (a Chivers Russel iirc). I’ve attached a photo (taken on Andy Cundick’s ‘Llanfair’ in 2017) of my effort. The resulting loco had inside frames but is smaller than a OO scale model (other than cab height) due to its HO scale starting point. Best wishes, Julien On 11 Sep 2024, at 03:22, John Hurley via groups.io <johnwhhurley@...> wrote: Hi Julien, Thanks for that! I know that James Hilton (Paxton-road) used the chassis of an n gauge Grafar GWR 2-6-2t 61xx prairie tank on a 3D print of the T&D Kerr Stuart from Shapeways. It came out great and I’m in the process of doing trying that now, so atleast I have that. But James had previously built 2 ex-Chivers Tralee and Dingle Hunslets in 009 but I know he had to do a lot of work on them. (I’ve asked around and looked for the Chivers kits btw but can’t find any and Chivers themselves won’t respond so I’m taking that as a hard “no, none available” lol) So I was planning on trying to scratch build the T5 in plastic and then mount it also on an n guage Grafar prairie tank. But if Allen is making a kit (or even just the loco shell?) I’d rather use that. John On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 4:51 PM, Julienwebb via groups.io <julienwebb@...> wrote: I seem to recall that the Branchlines kit could be built for 009 by moving the wheels to be between rather than outside the frames, but it may also need the frames moving out slightly(so longer chassis spacers). I think it was either an option one could request from Branchlines when ordering the kit or it was a separate ‘add on’ kit. One may have featured in NG&IRM Review built by Yuji Niwa (a very good Japanese NG modeller who seems to have disappeared). This was under the previous ownership (Andrew Mullins?) but based on how many I haven’t seen in the wild I wonder how many were produced, let alone built, for 009 as I don’t recall seeing any other kits built to 009 either in photographs or the flesh (metal.) As to how one could do it now I wonder if using wheels and outside frame axles for 9mm gauge from Mosskito (available through Light Railway Stores) would be the way to do. These have square ended axles that make quartering a doddle, but I wonder if the 2 mm throw plastic cranks would be too small for the 18” (iirc) cylinder stroke. However as the largest Mosskito wheels available are 10 mm the smaller crank throw may not look too bad. Another thought is that as the shouldered axles are 1.5 mm diameter at the ends (2 mm in the middle) it may be possible to fit 12mm diameter wheels (OO/EM rolling stock or tender wheels perhaps as you don’t need crank pins for outside frames) if they have the right sized hole on the middle. OOn3 wagon wheels 12
Hi, yet another newbie question: where can I buy 8mm spoked wheels, as per those that come with Dundas T&D kits? I have some which were produced as the OO9 version (heresy!). Dundas don't list them and ringing Gibson seems to be an exercise in frustration. I asked Branchlines while I was buying another CVR coach but he does have any stock. Anyone else have them of do I have to persist with Gibson? Thanks, Brian
