Beyond the Book has a New Title! Beyond the Book is excited to announce its newest title Buckle Up by Lawerence Lindell. Beyond the Book’s first graphic novel, Buckle Up is a vibrant and thought-provoking story that invites readers on a journey through a world of self-discovery, resilience, and the African American experience. This beautifully illustrated work explores themes of identity, culture, and the importance of community, making it a perfect complement to the DC Public Library’s The Negro Motorist Green Book exhibition, which celebrates the rich history of African American travel and resilience. Graphic novels are a great way to slowly introduce beginning readers into the world of text reading! The combination of visual and textual elements act as a bridge and can be a helpful tool as they enter school and beyond. In Buckle Up, Lindell’s powerful storytelling and striking visuals guide readers through a narrative that both entertains and educates, reflecting the spirit of overcoming adversity in the face of systemic challenges. The book highlights personal growth and the strength of identity, resonating deeply with themes explored in the Green Book exhibition, which highlights how African Americans navigated the complexities of segregation while embracing empowerment through travel. Members can stop by any neighborhood library to receive a FREE copy of Buckle Up and a fun activity book as well as special invites to events for Beyond the Book members! Explore Freegal Music+ DC Reads Returns DC Reads is back with three exciting DMV area authors who are sharing their newest work with the DC Public Library community! In partnership with the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, you are invited to read and discuss these exciting titles at three city-wide virtual book clubs and special opportunities to engage with each author culminating in a panel conversation with all three authors at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in March. The first virtual book club takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. for Alice McDermott’s Absolution. The book tells the story of two young American wives in Saigon 1963, who form a wary alliance following a miscarriage. Tricia is a starry-eyed newlywed, married to a rising oil engineer "on loan" to US Navy Intelligence. Charlene is a practiced corporate spouse and mother of three, a talented hostess and determined altruist, on a mission to relieve the "wretchedness" she sees all around her. Sixty years later, Charlene's daughter reaches out to Tricia, now widowed and living in Washington. As the two relive their shared experience in Saigon, they are forced to come to terms with the ways their own lives have been shaped and stunted by Charlene's pursuit of "inconsequential good." Plus, don’t miss Alice McDermott’s writing workshop “Is This As Good As You Can Make It?” on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Park Library. Open to all, this workshop will focus on revision in writing. Revision can be illuminating, but it can also be deadening: when does not good enough become not bad, when does not bad become brilliant, and when does the pursuit of brilliance become the dawn of despair? A discussion about the endless challenge to write better sentences, better scenes, better characters, better stories. Bring your writing and be ready to revise! Don't cry (or vote) for me Argentina! 2
I am truly honored to receive two of the five nominations for best Post of the Year. Accomplishing something so remarkable and unprecedented in the history of the Cleveland Park list serve is more than sufficient for my ego (and id). Accordingly, I humbly request that precious votes are not wasted on either the nomination for "Giverny Gone Wild" or "Candy vs Potatoes". We have way too much plastic in our home as it is. Any more plastic might push us over the edge. So yes, I choose two nominations in lieu of one plastic "Listy". “AginationImay EmperSay RiumphatTay” (For those not fluent in Pig Latin, in Latin it’s “Imagination Semper Triumphat”) Henry Docter --- Editor's note: No need for the "Marlon Brando spurns the Oscar" bit! If you win, you can protest plastic and accept an environmentally-friendly virtual Listy instead!

Winter Weather Advisory - District of Columbia: Freezing rain on Tuesday, December 24
This is an important message from the District of Columbia AlertDC system. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory which will be in effect from 5AM to 1PM Tuesday, December 24, 2024. WHAT: Freezing rain expected. Total ice accumulation of a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch. A dusting to one tenth of an inch of snow is possible. WHERE: Portions of DC, central, north central, northeast, and northern Maryland, and northern Virginia. IMPACTS: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Precipitation begins as light freezing rain early Tuesday morning along and west of US-15, then begins along the Interstate 95 corridor around or just before sunrise. Some snow could mix in at times, though that is most likely along and north of Interstate 70. Precipitation transitions to a mix of rain and freezing rain late Tuesday morning, before coming to an end early Tuesday afternoon. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury. Sent by AlertDC Monday, December 23, 2024 3:16 AM

My experiences with Lyft and other ride shares 11
Interesting... I thought it was just me. I took two trips last week--both to Northeast DC, one with Uber & one with Lyft. The Lyft trip to the Hill was in the early evening. The route the guy took was unbelievable. Actually I couldn't even reproduce it if I tried. The Uber was equally inexplicable (should have been a straight shot down Mass. and then over on H.) The Uber guy told me they are "required" to use "Uber maps" (true?). The other fellow used his phone but I have no idea which app. I tried to say something but I wasn't forceful about it because I wasn't in a hurry. I have no idea how they work out their pricing--but the trip was very expensive & I assume "distance" figured in. Next time I will run my own Google Map & be a Holly Hunter in the back seat! Kate --- Editor's note: "Holly Hunter in the back seat" is a reference to a hilarious -- a very relatable (at least for me!) -- scene in the 1987 movie "Broadcast News" in which the tightly-wound news producer character played by Holly Hunter gives incredibly detailed driving directions to a DC cab driver. I was hoping to find a video clip to post here but I did about half a dozen Youtube searches before I gave up. If anyone can find it, by all means, post it to clevelandpark@groups.io - from previous message - [snip] I also "back seat drive" because if I do not pay attention, they will end up in Rockville on the way to the Kennedy Center. GW Immediate & Primary Care no longer offers "immediate care" [Cleveland Park listserv]
But are you seeing medical doctors when you visit All Care? Or nurses? The urgent care place on the corner of Connecticut Ave. and Porter Street rarely seemed to have doctors. I visited the Minute Clinic place that shares the 5454 Wisconsin Avenue umbrella, just north of the DC line. I think I saw an osteopathic doctor there. But she gave me half the dose that was needed to combat my infection. She didn't seem to know what a regular dose was. I had to see my regular internist to get the second half of the medication. Carren - previous message - There is also a new AllCare that opened in Van Ness, across the street from Sfoglina. Has pretty standard hours for an urgent care facility https://allcarefamilymed.com/locations/van-ness/

Vote in The Cleveland Park Listies 2024 - New, improved BALLOT with links to all the nominees (was: RE: What every list member wants to know: How to vote for your favorites in the Cleveland Park Listies)
Dear Listserv Community, Yesterday I posted the nominees for a Cleveland Park Listy in three more categories and followed that up with a message about voting (Dec 21, Message #220840 ). Looks like I made the voting process more cumbersome than it needed to be. Today’s message is intended to help matters along by presenting the ballot again, but this time, you will see a link for every one of the nominees, so that you can easily go back and forth, reading about who is up for which Listy, as you mark your ballot. May the best posts win! Happy voting! Peggy Robin, CP Listserv Moderator And Everybody on the MAP (Moderator’s Advisory Committee) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BALLOT - The Cleveland Park Listies 2024 VOTE FOR ONE in each category Return your ballot by 12 noon on Saturday, December 28, 2024! To return your ballot by email, use the “reply” button in your email program to create a reply to clevelandparklistservmoderator@... [clevelandparklistservmoderator @ gmail dot com]. Once you are in reply mode, you will be able to type an X or a ✓ next to the circle to indicate your choice in each category. Prefer to vote the old-fashioned way? Print the ballot below, use a pen or pencil to fill in the bubbles of your choices by hand, and then snail-mail the ballot back to: Cleveland Park Listserv, 3409 Ashley Terrace NW, DC 20008. Want to be even MORE retro? Don’t darken the circles with a pen but use a hole-punch to punch out the circle next to the candidate of your choice in each category. You can even leave hanging chads – your vote will still count! Are you a bit old-school but still tech-savvy enough to use a camera-phone to send an image of your completed ballot? Then take a picture of the page and use your phone’s email function to send it to clevelandparklistservmoderator@groups.io. You can also send it to the Listserv posting address, clevelandpark@groups.io, and your vote will count, but it won’t be posted as a Listserv message. This is a secret ballot election! GW Immediate & Primary Care no longer offers "immediate care" 10
CAUTION NEIGHBORS: I found a locked door and a dark interior on Friday at 3:15 PM when seeking care at GW Immediate & Primary Care facility in Cleveland Park (although the posted hours on the door and the web site are 8AM – 8PM). When I phoned GW, I was told that they no longer provide urgent care and that to get “immediate care” you must have a previously scheduled appointment. Obviously, no immediate care appointments were available in a prematurely closed facility. My explorations suggest that neighbors needing urgent or immediate care should consider the MedStar facility in Adams Morgan at 1805 Columbia Road (just off Calvert & 18th) https://www.medstarhealth.org/locations/urgent-care-adams-morgan Mark Rosenman --------- Editor's note: The GW Immediate & Primary Care website needs to be updated to make clear that they're not seeing walk-ins anymore. The wording on the front page of the website now says that you can view available appointments through the online booking site On My Way -- but it sounds like what they really mean is, "Don't come in unless you have an appointment." The availability of immediate care services is subject to change due to provider availability or patient volume. For your convenience, we now offer On My Way, a feature through MyChart that allows you to see immediate care appointment availability and book your appointment for immediate care online.
